About Bert Bateman

I was born and raised in Newport News and graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1980 with a degree in Government/Foreign Affairs and History. I hold the position of Senior Vice President at TowneBank (Oyster Point Business Park) in the commercial banking division.

I have been married to my wife, Mary, for 24 years and have three children: Emmy, Hank and Sam.

My civic service includes the following:

Councilman Bateman and His Family

Bert was born in Newport News. He lived on Shoe Lane most of his life. He and his wife Mary have three children: Emmy 23, Hank 20 and Sam 15.

Emmy and Hank both went to school at the University of Georgia. Emmy now works for the Hotel Indigo Athens. She graduated from UGA in 2009 with a BA in International Affairs and a Certificate in the Music Business Program at the Terry College of Business (UGA). Hank is currently a Junior at UGA. Sam lives at home and is a freshman in high school. Bert taught school for two years after graduating from Hampden-Sydney. Bert has been a banker for over 26 years and is now a Senior Vice President at TowneBank. Bert and Mary have been married for 28 years. They live on Parkway Drive in Riverside. Mary graduated from Christopher Newport University with a degree in elementary education. She started out her career as a teacher in the Newport News School Division in 1981, and is currently the leader of the pre-school screening team for the Newport News School Division.
